If, by now, you’ve seen your way through college and you’ve done your fair share of both book and online reading, you’ll recognize that this disease is associated with the skin. By now, most of you will have read between the lines as far as dermatitis is concerned. But as for the herpetiformis in dermatitis herpetiformis, disturbing thoughts may have occurred among even the better than average practicing readers.
More reading between the lines and certainly more informed reading is required. Yes, it is true that herpes is associated with sexually transmitted blemishes (but not necessarily diseases) but anyone can get herpes without ever having had any sexual contact. All it takes is close contact with others through a variety of ways, including the sharing of cooking and eating utensils. Now, as far as dermatitis herpetiformis is concerned, it is but one of a number of the symptoms associated with the Celiac disease (which results in high levels of intolerance to gluten).
It is extremely painful and itchy blisters on parts of the body are visible manifestations of this disease. It is caused by the body’s attack on the gluten protein within its small intestines. What happens is this. The body’s immune system redirects its fight against high levels of gluten to the dermal layers of the skin. This typical action is classified as an autoimmune response. This results in the formation of Ig A antibodies.
Further, the antibodies are identifying the gluten protein as an external threat, proceeding to attack it in the small intestines. But in the case of DH, the antibodies are deposited under the upper layer of the skin. This then results in the formation of extremely itchy red blisters. Such unpleasant visible manifestations will be found around the knees and elbows. But it can also be found near the buttocks.
DH blisters can form on the face and the scalp. And there you go. Just a brief summary account of what dermatitis herpetiformis entails. But nothing to be scared of, because it can be treated with a healthy inclusion of quinoa in the diet.
